Thermal transfer ribbon information:

There are three basic ribbon types: wax, wax-resin and resin. The characteristics of each ribbon is as follows:

Ribbon Types:

Wax Ribbons - Most widely used for shipping, distribution and product identification labels. Different formulations are available depending on specific requirements. Wax ribbons are formulated in general purpose and low melting point for high speed printing.

Wax/Wax Resin - For labels which require increased scratch and smudge resistance. When used in combination with synthetic label stock this ribbon will produce a label that is resistant to moisture and ultra-violet light. This type of label can stand up to exposure to rain, sun and cold.

Resin Ribbon - Most scratch and smudge resistant. Ideal for applications that require images to stand up to continuous use in factories and distribution centers. Certain formulations are steam press resistant and others are washable and dry cleanable.

Ribbon Width:

Ribbons must be ordered in specific widths. The width you use depends on the width of your label. If the ribbon is much wider then the label you are printing, you will be wasting money. The ribbon width should be close to the actual size of the label you are printing. The following are some of the standard widths that are stocked.

25.4 MM 1.0” wide 76.2 MM 3.0” wide 114.3 MM 4.5” wide
38.1 MM 1.5” wide 89.0 MM 3.5” wide 127.0 MM 5.0” wide
50.8 MM 2.0” wide 101.6 MM 4.0” wide 139.7 MM 5.5” wide
64.0 MM 2.5” wide 108.0 MM 4.25” wide 165.1 MM 6.5” wide

Ribbon Length:

It is desirable to use the longest ribbon your machine will accept so that you have to re-load less often. Each machine has a recommended ribbon length, however, if you are not sure which length it is, we can suggest the proper ribbon for your machine. The most common ribbon lengths are:

Meters Feet
210 690
360 1182
450 1478
600 1968

Ribbon Order Size:

How many ribbons do you need? Since ribbons are sold by the roll and labels are sold by the thousand, it is not always easy to figure out how many rolls you need. Ribbons typically are ordered by the case. Case sizes are usually 24 and 36 rolls per case. However, “kit” packaging is also available. “Kit” packaging will package the labels and ribbons together in the same box.
